Today, I'm in New York City to discuss how our infrastructure law is rebuilding the roads, bridges, and rail that commuters and businesses rely on – and finally replacing the Hudson Tunnel. The long-awaited replacement of the Hudson Tunnel has been a major priority for New Yorkers for years. The tunnel was originally built in 1910 and has seen its fair share of wear and tear over the past century. In recent years, it had become increasingly unreliable due to corrosion, structural damage, and other issues. Now, thanks to an ambitious infrastructure law passed by Congress last year, we are finally seeing progress on this project. The new tunnel will be twice as wide as the old one and will feature two tracks instead of one. This will allow for more efficient travel between Manhattan and New Jersey while also increasing safety standards for commuters. In addition to replacing the tunnel itself, this infrastructure law is also providing funds for improvements to nearby roads, bridges, and rail lines that are used by both commuters and businesses alike. These upgrades include new lighting systems along highways; improved signage; better pedestrian access; upgraded track systems; increased capacity on existing trains; improved station facilities; additional bus lanes; new bike paths; improved traffic signals; expanded parking lots; enhanced security measures at train stations; increased safety measures along roadways; improved drainage systems around bridges; updated sewer lines near railways stations; and much more. This investment in our infrastructure is not only helping us improve our transportation network but also create jobs throughout the region. It's estimated that these projects will create thousands of construction jobs over the next few years while also boosting local economies with additional spending from travelers who take advantage of these improvements. We are confident that these investments will pay off in terms of safer roads, faster commutes times, increased economic activity across the region – all while allowing us to finally replace an aging piece of our transportation network with a modernized version that can serve us well into the future.
