Residents of Ubatuba, São Sebastião, Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba and Bertioga in Brazil are facing a difficult situation after torrential rains caused flooding and landslides in the area. The rains have left many homes inundated with water and mud while several roads have been closed due to the danger posed by landslides. The heavy rains began on Monday night and continued throughout Tuesday morning. According to local authorities, more than 200mm of rain fell in some areas within 24 hours. This was more than double the average rainfall for this time of year. The flooding has caused extensive damage to property as well as disruption to public services such as transportation. Many roads have been closed due to landslides or flooding making it difficult for people to get around. Several bridges have also been damaged making them unsafe for use. Local residents are being warned not to attempt crossing flooded rivers or streams as the current is strong enough to sweep away even large vehicles. Rescue teams are working hard to evacuate people from their homes but many remain stranded due to blocked roads or inaccessible areas. The government has declared a state of emergency in all five municipalities affected by the floods and is providing assistance where possible including food supplies and medical aid for those affected by the disaster. Emergency shelters have also been set up in order to provide temporary accommodation for those who have lost their homes or cannot return home due to blocked roads or other reasons related to the floods.
