The Australian public is calling for a debate between the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Penny Wong, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison. With an election just around the corner, many are eager to hear from both leaders on their plans for Australia’s future. Penny Wong has been a strong advocate for progressive policies since her election to Parliament in 2002. She was previously Minister for Climate Change and Water, as well as Finance and Deregulation in the Rudd Government. Since 2013 she has held various shadow ministerial portfolios under Bill Shorten’s leadership including Foreign Affairs, Trade and Investment, Education and Training, and Employment and Workplace Relations. In 2018 she was elected Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Scott Morrison became Prime Minister of Australia in August 2018 after winning a Liberal Party leadership spill against Peter Dutton. He was previously Treasurer under Malcolm Turnbull’s government before his ascension to Prime Minister following Turnbull’s resignation. During his time as Treasurer he championed economic reforms such as tax cuts for businesses with turnovers up to $50 million per year and income tax cuts for middle-income earners. He also oversaw changes to welfare payments such as reducing eligibility criteria for Newstart recipients aged 22-24 years old from three months to one month without work experience or training qualifications. A debate between these two influential politicians would be beneficial not only because it would allow Australians to make an informed decision at this year's federal election but also because it would provide an opportunity for each leader to explain their policies in detail and answer questions from members of the public directly about their plans if elected into office again this year. The call from Australians comes amid reports that neither party has yet agreed on a date or format for any debates between either leader during this election campaign period despite calls from media outlets across Australia asking them both to do so publicly. It is hoped that by getting enough support behind this petition that both parties will agree on some form of televised debate which will give Australians access to all sides of politics before they cast their vote come May 18th 2019 when polling day arrives.
