As Winter Storm Elliott continues to make its way across the country, many are still determined to celebrate Festivus despite the harsh weather conditions. This holiday, which is celebrated on December 23rd, has been around since 1966 when it was created by author Daniel O’Keefe. It gained popularity after being featured in an episode of Seinfeld in 1997. The holiday is known for its unique traditions such as the “Airing of Grievances” where family members tell each other all of their grievances from the past year and then they move onto “Feats of Strength” where they compete against each other in physical activities. The last tradition is that a Festivus pole made out of aluminum should be put up instead of a Christmas tree. Despite the cold temperatures and snowfall, people are still celebrating this unique holiday with optimism and joy. Many have taken to social media to share photos and stories about how they are celebrating Festivus during Winter Storm Elliott. Some have posted pictures of their decorated Festivus poles while others have shared videos of them doing feats of strength in their own homes or even outside! There are also those who are gathering together with friends or family virtually via Zoom or Skype so that they can still partake in these traditions safely from home. It is truly inspiring to see so many people coming together during this difficult time and finding ways to celebrate Festivus despite Winter Storm Elliott. We salute all those brave souls who choose to remain optimistic no matter what life throws at them! Happy Festivus!
