Taiwan is no stranger to adversity, and the recent potential outbreak of a new virus has been met with swift and decisive action. The government has worked diligently to ensure that any potential outbreak is quickly contained and mitigated, while also maintaining a sense of normalcy for citizens. In response to the question posed by @usahanablanc on Twitter, Premier Su Tseng-chang and President Tsai Ing-wen have both come out in support of Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung's plan to implement preventative measures before any outbreak occurs. Chen's plan includes strengthening border control, monitoring imported goods, increasing testing capacity, providing quarantine facilities for travelers from high risk areas, and increasing public education about the virus. The government has also implemented economic relief measures such as tax cuts for businesses affected by the pandemic and increased unemployment benefits for those who have lost their jobs due to it. In addition, they are providing additional funding for research into treatments and vaccines as well as expanding healthcare coverage so that more people can access medical care if needed. The Taiwanese people have also shown their resilience in the face of this crisis by following social distancing guidelines, wearing masks when out in public, washing their hands regularly, avoiding large gatherings where possible, and staying informed about the latest developments regarding the virus. This collective effort has helped keep infection rates low compared to other countries around the world despite Taiwan’s close proximity to China where the virus originated. It is clear that Taiwan is taking all necessary steps to ensure its citizens remain safe during this difficult time while still allowing them some sense of normalcy in their lives. With strong leadership from Premier Su Tseng-chang and President Tsai Ing-wen combined with collective efforts from citizens across Taiwan working together towards a common goal – there is no doubt that this country will be able to overcome any potential outbreak should it occur.
