WestJet Accused of Harassing Customers with Unwanted Calls

Numerous reports have surfaced alleging that Canadian airline Westjet is harassing its customers through unwanted phone calls despite multiple attempts by them trying to block their number or be placed on a no-call list. The CRTC has warned against such practices but it remains unclear if Westjet is violating any rules at this time

Customers of the Canadian airline WestJet have recently taken to social media to express their frustration over what they allege is a pattern of harassment from the company. Reports have been made by customers who say that despite multiple attempts to block WestJet’s phone number, the company continues to call them from new numbers. In addition, some customers claim that when they press “2” on their phones in an attempt to be placed on a no-call list, it does not work. The issue first came to light when one customer tweeted about her experience with WestJet, saying “Stop calling me @WestJet I block your number every time and you find a new number to call me from. And, stop asking me to press 2 to be placed on your no call list-it’s not working…grrrrrr” Since then, other customers have come forward with similar stories. One customer said that he had blocked five different numbers associated with WestJet in the past year alone and still received calls from the company. In response, WestJet has issued a statement apologizing for any inconvenience caused by these calls and has assured customers that they are looking into the matter. They also encouraged anyone who is having trouble being removed from their call list or blocking their phone number should contact them directly so they can investigate further. However, many customers remain unconvinced and continue to express their dissatisfaction with how this situation has been handled so far. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) states that companies must follow strict guidelines when it comes to telemarketing calls and warns against using tactics such as repeatedly calling people after being asked not too or using different phone numbers each time in order to bypass caller ID systems. It remains unclear whether or not WestJet is violating these rules but given the numerous complaints made by customers it appears likely that further investigation will be necessary in order for this issue to be resolved properly.
