After a cold start to the year, Japan is set for a dramatic change in weather conditions next week. The westerly winds that brought record-breaking temperatures to Europe at the beginning of the year are now moving towards Japan, bringing with them warmer air. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued an early warning about the high temperatures expected next week. The temperatures across the country are expected to be higher than average for this time of year, with some areas seeing highs of up to 15°C. This will be especially noticeable in areas where snowfall has been particularly heavy over recent weeks, such as Hokkaido and northern Honshu. In Tokyo, temperatures could reach 12°C or more on some days during the coming week. The warm weather is expected to last until mid-February at least, before colder air returns from Siberia and brings temperatures back down again. However, there is still potential for further record-breaking warmth if conditions remain favourable. The warm weather comes as welcome news after a cold start to 2021 in many parts of Japan. While it may bring relief from the chill for many people, those living in coastal areas should take extra care due to increased risks of flooding and landslides associated with heavy rainfall and high tides.
