In a recent press conference, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Keiichi Ishii, announced the implementation of an online system for driver’s license renewal. The system will allow drivers to renew their licenses at any time and from any location. The current process requires drivers to visit a local driving center in order to have their license renewed. This often leads to long lines and waits due to the high volume of people seeking renewal services. With the new online system, drivers can avoid this inconvenience by completing the process remotely. The minister noted that the system is being implemented as part of Japan’s effort to create a more convenient society through digitalization. He also expressed his hope that it would lead to increased safety on roads as well as improved customer service at driving centers. The government has been working on developing this system since 2017 and is now ready for its launch in 2020. It will be available nationwide with some exceptions such as those who need special medical examinations or are applying for international driver’s licenses. The minister also emphasized that while the new system will make things easier for drivers, they should still take responsibility for their own safety when operating vehicles on public roads. He urged all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic laws and regulations in order ensure everyone’s safety on the roadways.
