Ancient Nalanda University Discovered in 2003

In 2003, a monumental discovery was made when archaeologists uncovered the remains of the ancient Nalanda University. This incredible university was at least ten times bigger than a library found in a monastery in Tibet, and it is believed to have been built during the 5th century AD. The site is located near the town of Bihar Sharif, India, and it has been estimated that this university had over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers at its peak. It was also one of the most important Buddhist centers of learning in Asia. The ruins are incredibly well-preserved and they provide an insight into how advanced education was during this period. The archaeological team who discovered the site have revealed that there were several buildings on campus including lecture halls, libraries, meditation halls and residential areas for both students and teachers. The library alone is said to have contained thousands of manuscripts written on palm leaves as well as other materials such as paper and birch bark. The discovery of Nalanda University has shed light on many aspects of life during this period including religion, philosophy and science. It has also provided researchers with valuable information about how education systems evolved over time in India. Nalanda University is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site which means that it will be preserved for future generations to enjoy and learn from.
