Twitter Employees Demand Trump Ban After January 6th

After events unfolded on January 6th, employees at Twitter have organized together demanding their employer ban President Donald Trump from the platform due to his controversial posts over the years which many believe led up to the insurrection at Capitol Hill. Outside organizations have also joined in demanding this action from Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter; however he has yet to address any potential changes regarding President Trump's account specifically but has promised steps towards ensuring more accurate information is shared moving forward.

In the wake of the events that unfolded on January 6th, employees at Twitter have organized to demand their employer ban President Donald Trump from the platform. This comes after years of controversial posts from Trump's account, which many believe led to the insurrection that occurred at the Capitol building. One anonymous Twitter employee stated, “There is a lot of employee advocacy happening right now. We are trying to make sure our voices are heard and that we can push for meaningful change in how this platform is used.” The demand for a ban has been echoed by many outside of Twitter as well. On January 8th, over 300 civil rights organizations sent an open letter to Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, urging him to permanently suspend President Trump’s account due to his repeated violations of the company’s terms and conditions. The letter states that “allowing [Trump] to use your platforms for his dangerous incitements is unacceptable and must end immediately.” Twitter has taken some action against President Trump since January 6th by suspending his account for 12 hours and adding warning labels on several tweets. However, many feel these measures are not enough and want a permanent suspension or ban from the platform altogether. In response to these demands, Jack Dorsey tweeted on January 14th saying “We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement...We will continue to point out incorrect or disputed information about elections globally." He did not address any potential changes regarding President Trump's account specifically but did state that they would be taking steps towards ensuring more accurate information was being shared on their platform moving forward.
