Today, Lily Ebert, an Auschwitz survivor, celebrates her 99th birthday. The milestone is a testament to her resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Born in 1921 in Poland, Lily was taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp at the age of 23. Despite enduring horrific conditions and witnessing unspeakable horrors, she managed to survive the ordeal and eventually moved to the United States where she married and had children. Today, Lily looks back on her life with optimism and hope for the future. “I never thought I would survive Auschwitz and have another birthday," said Lily. "At 99, I celebrate to show that the Nazis did not win!” Lily’s story has inspired many people around the world who are sharing their #HappyBirthdayLily wishes on social media platforms such as Twitter. Her story is also being shared by organizations such as Remembering Our Survivors which works to ensure that Holocaust survivors are remembered for generations to come. When asked about what advice she would give young people today, Lily said “Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle you know nothing about." Her words serve as a reminder that we should always strive for compassion and understanding towards others no matter what they may be going through in life. As we all take a moment today to wish Lily a happy 99th birthday we can also take away something from her story – hope for a better tomorrow no matter how dark things may seem right now.
