Canadians have been receiving automated spam calls from different local 519-250-#### numbers, with robotic Olivia from Amazon calling about charges for $$$. Despite the Do Not Call registry listing not being effective in preventing these calls, Canadians are rising to the challenge and taking control of their phones. The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) has stepped up to the plate and is working hard to help protect consumers from unwanted calls. The CRTC has implemented a number of measures that are designed to reduce or eliminate these automated spam calls. One measure that the CRTC has taken is implementing an “Unsolicited Communications Enforcement” program which allows them to investigate complaints about unwanted communications such as telemarketing, robocalls, text messages, faxes and emails. The program also allows them to issue warnings or monetary penalties if companies are found in violation of Canada’s anti-spam legislation (CASL). Bell Canada has also taken action by introducing its Call Display Plus service which provides customers with more information about incoming callers including their name, address and phone number. This service helps customers identify who is calling before they answer the phone so they can decide whether or not they want to take the call. In addition, Bell Canada offers a variety of services that can help block unwanted calls such as Anonymous Call Rejection which blocks all incoming anonymous calls; Call Block which allows customers to block up to 12 specific numbers; Nomorobo which uses an algorithm to detect robocalls; and SmartLine Caller ID which displays incoming caller information on your home phone screen even before you answer it. These measures demonstrate how Canadians are taking control of their phones by utilizing technology solutions provided by both government agencies and private companies alike. By doing so, Canadians can be assured that they will no longer have their time wasted by annoying automated spam calls coming in every 30 minutes from different local 519-250-#### numbers.
