Energy Drinks Linked to Increased Hair Loss in Men

A new study has revealed a potential link between consuming large amounts of energy drinks and increased risk for male pattern baldness in men. Researchers believe this could be due to high levels of caffeine and sugar present in many popular brands leading to reduced blood flow and inflammation around the scalp area respectively.

A recent study has revealed a potential link between energy drinks and increased hair loss in men. The research, conducted by the Department of Dermatology at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, found that men who drank more than two cans of energy drinks per day were more likely to experience male pattern baldness. The study surveyed 1,500 men aged between 20 and 59 years old from Japan’s Kansai region. The participants were asked about their daily consumption of energy drinks as well as other lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption. The results showed that those who drank more than two cans of energy drinks per day had a higher risk of developing male pattern baldness compared to those who did not drink any energy drinks at all. The researchers believe that the high levels of caffeine and sugar present in many energy drinks may be contributing to the increased risk for hair loss in men. Caffeine is known to reduce blood flow to the scalp which can lead to hair follicle damage and eventual hair loss. Additionally, sugar can cause inflammation which can also contribute to hair loss over time. Although this study was conducted on Japanese men only, it is possible that similar effects could be seen in other populations as well due to similar lifestyle factors being present across different cultures. Further research will need to be done before any definitive conclusions can be made about the effects of energy drinks on male pattern baldness but these initial findings are certainly concerning for anyone considering drinking large amounts of these beverages on a regular basis.
