Today, President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks on a historic jobs report. The report, released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), showed that the unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in April 2021, its lowest level since March 2020 when the pandemic first began to take hold in the United States. This is a significant milestone for the country as it continues its economic recovery from the devastating effects of COVID-19. The BLS reported that total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 266,000 in April and has now increased by 8.2 million since February 2020 when job losses began due to the pandemic’s impact on businesses across all sectors of the economy. The leisure and hospitality sector saw some of the largest gains with an increase of 331,000 jobs last month while manufacturing added another 44,000 jobs and construction added another 110,000 jobs. The encouraging news comes as more Americans are getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and restrictions are being lifted in many states across the country allowing businesses to reopen at full capacity for the first time since last year’s lockdowns were imposed nationwide. In his remarks today, President Biden is expected to emphasize how far we have come in our economic recovery from last year’s crisis but also caution that there is still much work ahead before we can declare victory over this pandemic-induced recession. He will likely call on Congress to pass additional stimulus measures such as infrastructure spending and tax cuts which could further boost job growth and help put more Americans back to work in good paying jobs with benefits they can count on for years into the future. The president’s speech will be broadcast live at 2pm EST today via his official Twitter account @POTUS so tune in if you want to hear what he has to say about this historic jobs report and what it means for our nation’s future prospects for continued economic growth and prosperity under his leadership.
