It’s no secret that as we grow and develop, our skills improve. We become more adept at whatever it is we do, whether it be art, writing, or something else entirely. But what happens when you go back and look at your old work? You cringe for a bit, then keep going. But does this really mean you’re getting better? The idea that “you’re still getting better” is a comforting one - after all, who doesn’t want to believe they are improving? Unfortunately, the reality is much less encouraging. No matter how much progress you make in any given field, looking back at your old work will always be a source of disappointment. No matter how hard you try to move forward and grow as an artist or writer or whatever it may be that you do - if you take the time to look back at your old work with an honest eye - chances are you won't like what you see. The fact of the matter is that no amount of practice or effort can erase the mistakes made in our past works; they remain forever etched into our memories and on paper (or canvas). It's easy to get caught up in the idea that every day brings us closer to perfection; but this simply isn't true. While improvement over time is inevitable for anyone who puts in enough effort - there will always be something about our past works which makes us cringe with embarrassment and regret. So while it's important to keep pushing forward and striving for greatness - don't forget about those moments when looking back reveals flaws which can never truly be fixed; because sometimes even our best efforts aren't enough to make us completely satisfied with where we started from.
