Regulators and Time Machines

This soliloquy reflects on the absurdity of being asked by regulators to disclose past performance as if one had access to a time machine.

What is this demand they make of me? That I must disclose the past performance, As if I had a time machine? It seems absurd to think that I could see Into the future, or even into the past. And yet they want me to declare it true, To tell them what has already come to pass. Ah, but how can I be sure that itโ€™s not new? That it is not some sort of trickery or jest? For who knows what lies in store for us tomorrow? Who can say what fate awaits us in the future? We may think we know but our knowledge is hollow. Our plans are subject to change with each passing hour. So why do these regulators insist on this demand, That I must speak of something that happened before? Do they think I have a time machine at hand, To go back and witness all those days of yore? Do they expect me to divine some ancient lore, And use my magic powers to unlock its secrets door? No! It cannot be so! For such things are impossible! We cannot look into the past and view its scene unfold. We cannot predict what will happen next; we can only hope and pray for the best. So why do these regulators insist on this demand-- That I must speak of something that happened before? All I can do is trust in fate's grand plan And accept whatever comes as part of life's great game. So let us all take comfort in knowing That no one has control over time-- Not even these regulators who ask me To disclose what was done long ago-- As if by some miracle or feat Of an ancient wizardry unknown To mere mortals like you and me!
