On the eve of the sixth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Eiffel Tower lit up Paris’ skyline with the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The symbolic gesture was made to show solidarity with those affected by Russian aggression and to honor those who have lost their lives in the conflict. The display began at sunset on February 20th and lasted until midnight, illuminating the iconic tower in a combination of blue and yellow - representing both Ukraine’s national flag and its people. This is not the first time that France has used its most recognizable landmark to send a message; it has also been lit up for other occasions such as World AIDS Day, Earth Day, and International Women’s Day. The move comes after years of tension between Russia and Ukraine over Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Since then, there have been numerous clashes between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine that have left thousands dead. The situation has only worsened since then as tensions continue to escalate between both countries. The lighting of the Eiffel Tower was met with praise from Ukrainians around the world who took to social media to express their gratitude for France's support during this difficult time. Many saw it as a sign that they are not alone in their struggle against Russian aggression and that there are still allies willing to stand up for them even when times are tough. France's President Emmanuel Macron echoed these sentiments when he spoke about why he chose to light up his country's most famous landmark: “We will never forget what happened six years ago today… We must never forget what happened here… We will always stand by our Ukrainian friends." This powerful message resonated with many around Europe who also showed their support for Ukraine through similar displays on monuments across various cities including London, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Brussels, Vienna, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Prague among others. It is clear that despite ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine - European nations remain united in standing together against any form of aggression or violation of international law no matter where it takes place.
