The Poison of Possession

This poem reflects on the feeling of loss when something that used to belong to us goes up higher than what we currently possess - an experience which can often leave us feeling helpless and powerless in life's journey.

I once held something so dear, It was my most treasured possession. I thought I'd never have to let go, But then it began to grow and flow. The thing I used to own, now gone, As if it had never been born. It moved on without me in tow, My heart sank as I watched it go. It rose up higher than before, While my hands were empty evermore. I felt the pain of its loss deep within, Nothing more toxic than watching this begin. The joy of others made me feel so small, As they basked in what was once mine after all. My possessions no longer made me proud, Just a reminder that things can't be held forever loud. Nothing is more toxic than watching something you used to own go up more than what you own; A reminder that nothing here is ever fully known. What was once yours can be taken away; No matter how hard you may try and stay. Life has a way of changing our course; A lesson we must all learn with remorse. We can only hold onto things for so long; Eventually we must move on and be strong. No matter how much we may wish or pray; Nothing will last forever come what may!
