The small towns of Sayulita, Mexico City, Tulum, Cabo, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Escondido have recently been overrun with “Eat-Pray-Love” white women. These women are known for their tendency to overpay for rent, throw money at the local male populace, and loudly talk about shots and cocks in public. The influx of these women has sparked outrage among locals who are fed up with the disruption to their way of life. Local business owners have reported that these women are driving away customers due to their loud behavior and inappropriate conversations. They often pay more than what is necessary for rent or services as they don’t understand the local economy or culture. Furthermore, they tend to ignore the advice of locals when it comes to safety measures such as avoiding certain areas at night or not walking alone after dark. Many locals feel that these “Eat-Pray-Love” white women are taking advantage of the hospitality and generosity of Mexican people without understanding or respecting the culture. Some residents have even gone so far as to call them “tourist parasites” due to their lack of respect for local customs and laws. The situation has become so dire that some towns have started implementing regulations on tourist behavior in an effort to protect their citizens from disruptive visitors. For example, Sayulita recently passed a law requiring all tourists staying in town for more than three days to register with local authorities before being allowed access into certain areas. It remains unclear how long this influx will last or if any other measures will be taken by authorities in order to protect Mexican citizens from disrespectful tourists. Until then, many locals remain outraged by this invasion of “Eat-Pray-Love” white women who seem intent on disrupting their way of life without regard for cultural sensitivities or safety concerns.
