In the wake of two devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey in recent weeks, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has pledged long-term aid to help the country recover. The earthquakes, which occurred on March 9th and April 24th, killed at least 119 people and injured more than 1,000. Blinken announced his pledge during a press conference held at the State Department on Tuesday. He expressed his condolences to those affected by the earthquakes and said that the US was ready to provide assistance in any way it could. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by these earthquakes," Blinken said. "The United States stands with our friends in Turkey as they face this tragedy." He added that he had spoken with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu about providing aid to those affected by the quakes. “We discussed ways we can support relief efforts for those affected and how we can help rebuild homes and businesses," he said. "The United States is committed to providing long-term assistance to ensure a full recovery from this disaster." In addition to offering aid, Blinken also urged other countries around the world to join in helping Turkey recover from its losses. “I call on all nations who are able to do so to join us in supporting relief efforts," he said. "Together we can make sure that no one is left behind as we work together towards recovery."
