Marjorie Taylor Greene's Shocking Claim on Illegal Immigration

In a recent tweet, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has made a shocking claim about illegal immigration under President Biden. She claims that 6 billion people have crossed the border illegally since his inauguration - three quarters of the world's population. The tweet was in response to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's decision to put her on the House Homeland Security Committee. This decision has been met with criticism from both sides of the aisle due to her past controversial statements and beliefs, including conspiracy theories and false claims about mass voter fraud during the 2020 election. Greene's latest claim is no exception, as it is not only inaccurate but also incredibly inflammatory. According to U.S Customs and Border Protection data, there were over 172,000 apprehensions at the Southwest border in February 2021 alone - far fewer than 6 billion people. The Department of Homeland Security also reported that there were more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States as of January 2019 - again far fewer than 6 billion people. In response to Greene's statement, many Democratic lawmakers have expressed outrage at McCarthy for appointing her to such an important committee while ignoring her dangerous rhetoric and false claims. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) tweeted "This is who Kevin McCarthy puts on the f*cking Homeland Security Committee??", echoing similar sentiments from other Democrats across Congress who are calling for McCarthy to remove Greene from this position immediately or face consequences from their party come 2022 midterms elections.
